In the spirit of the International Women’s Day celebrated a couple of days ago, we are shedding light on a book by a Cuban American author called Margarita Engle in her book ‘Drum Dream Girl’, a story of how one brave girl went against all odds to change the narrative in the world of music.
The story is inspired by Millo Castro Zaldarriaga, a Chinese-African-Cuban girl who was able to break Cuba’s taboo against women drummers.
It is a story that highlights the relevance of dreaming big, being persistent and perseverant even when there are slim chances of success.
The book is great for children, it has the potential of acting as vehicle of change for anyone who chances on this read.
